The three numbers that matter

Every honest benchmark reports three things:

1. Average FPS , total frames divided by seconds. Useful for headlines misleading in isolation.

2. 1% low FPS , the average of the slowest 1% of frames. This is the number that reflects how smooth the game feels.

3. 0.1% low or frame-time max , the worst single spikes. High values mean visible stutter.

Trust the 1% low first. A card with 130 avg and 105 low feels better than one with 150 avg and 70 low.

Resolution matters more than you think

A CPU review at 1080p low settings tells you nothing about how the CPU behaves at 4K ultra and vice versa. Match the reviewers resolution to your resolution or the numbers are irrelevant.

  • CPU reviews should be read at 1080p low to isolate the CPU.
  • GPU reviews should be read at your target resolution and preset.

Watch for the settings row

"Ultra" is not a standard. One reviewers Ultra enables ray tracing anothers does not. Check the settings screenshot before comparing across channels.

Averages across many games hide a lot

A "20% faster on average across 15 games" headline can hide the fact that the card is 40% faster in five titles and identical in the other ten. Look at the per-game bars not the summary.

Frame-time graphs beat FPS graphs

A flat frame-time graph at 12 ms is heaven. A jagged one that averages 12 ms but spikes to 40 ms feels awful even though the FPS counter reads the same.

Cross-check with your own hardware

Once you buy the part use CapFrameX or PresentMon on the same benchmark scene. If your numbers are within 5% of the reviewers the part is healthy. If they are 20% lower look for a bottleneck.

Are synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark useful? For comparing GPUs to each other yes. For predicting real game FPS only loosely.

Why do YouTuber numbers vary so much? Different scenes different driver versions different Windows patches. A 5-10% spread is normal.
